Obituary

Carlton Dwight Pate was born October 12, 1954 in Cleveland, Ohio to Carlton Ulysses Pate and Ann Elizabeth Myles Pate. Carlton, being the second oldest of six children and the eldest son, had special care and protection over his siblings while they were growing up in the E. 112th and Superior neighborhood. Young Carlton was known in the neighborhood to be an active child, who enjoyed extracurricular activities such as swimming, baseball, ping pong, pool, and boxing. According to his little brother John, "he was the middleweight golden glove champion!" and his sister Teedy said he was a worldwide dancer. His brother Kelvin said he would sneak and wear Carlton's clothes from time to time, because he could "dress with the best of them." At an early age, he had shown to be passionate about the things he loved. Carlton's early education included Harry E. Davis, then onto John Hay High School were he earned his high school diploma in 1972. After school, Carlton began a lucrative career with Cleveland's Lincoln Electric as a journeyman/phaser-connector. He spent years honing this craft. This skill, in addition to the craftsmanship and carpentry learned from his father, Carlton U., affectionately called Blue Boat, propelled Carlton into a career in real estate investing. He loved doing the plumbing and dry walking himself. At the age of 18, he purchased a house for his mother, affectionately called "Mama," and soon after, he purchased an eight-unit apartment building on Cleveland's east side. Carlton had a heart for using his overflow to bless others, often opening h is home and wallet to those in need. Carlton gave his life to Christ early in life as a teenager and pledged to served God with his life. In 1981, Carlton, as a member of Elim Gospel Chapel on Cleveland's east-side, served in many roles, including Usher, Sunday School Teacher and Missionary at local nursing facilities, local churches and more. It was in doing this work for the Lord, that he met Gwendolyn Crutcher at a Sunday service. Carlton and Gwen married in January 1982. Their union gave four children; Jhosef Emmanuel, Rachel Danielle, James Philip and Mariah Pharin, all born and raised in Cleveland. Together, they expanded their real estate endeavors, purchasing two more homes in the Glenville neighborhood. Carlton and Gwen eventually moved their family to fellowship with the saints at Calvary Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Here, the Pates participated in Sunday school, Vacation Bible school, the men's, women's and youth choirs, praise dancing and more. Carlton was a devout member fo r many years and you would often find him in the front pew on Sundays and Wednesdays. If you didn't see him, you could certainly hear his boisterous distinctive voice, often times trying to reign in his youngest son, James, yelling "boy, get over here!" But mostly, his voice could be heard rejoicing and praising the Lord. Carlton was jack of many trades, and truly a can-do man. Between all of the properties under his belt, Carlton spent countless hours doing home improvement projects for his family and others. In spare time, he took on projects with his Dad, brothers, brother-in-law and other family members, often building porches, roofs, painting houses and more. In his spare time, Carlton enjoyed watching the Cleveland Cavaliers play basketball, reading the Bible, watching kung-fu and old westerns, enjoying home-cooked meals, spending time with his children and grandchildren, of whom he was most proud. If you knew Carlton, even for a little bit, you knew he could talk. And would talk, for hours. Even longer were his prayers. If a stranger at the beginning, by the end of the conversation, you walked away with a friend, a prayer warrior/partner and a testimony about the goodness of God. He had the ability to make you laugh, encourage you and gather you in one conversation. Like his father before him, he stayed cracking a few jokes on you before he let you leave and he almost never departed without saying "May God Bless you, and keep you and make His face to shine upon, you," or "Lord willing, I'll see you soon." Carlton was devoted to his family. His fierce love and protection over them knew no limits and he always always demonstrated it. He is preceded in death by his parents, Carlton and Ann Pate, and his younger sister, Onetha Russell. Carlton leaves to celebrate him his four children, Jhosef (Angela) Pate, Rachel (Jamary) Pate, James (Mironda) Pate and Mariah (Semaj) Sanford, his seven grandchildren, Iyana James, Jaelin Pate, Shyanne Pate, Quisson Still, Maya Still, James Pate, Jr. and Kaydence Sanford, his sister, Denise (Forrest) Woodyard; and brothers, Kelvin (Kim) Pate, Darryl (Michelle) Pate, John Pate, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. He will be incredibly missed by all who knew and loved him.
